The Costumes

The busy street has all strange faces,

I am amused at the thought that I am also one.

No one smiles, or looks at each other,

Immersed in thoughts, are strolling around.

Someone passes by and I feel a cold whiff of air,

At the nape of my neck, making me startle and turn back,

I am sure I haven’t met him, but I feel I know,

From where, I do not know, and he walks away!

That face seems so familiar, as if from a forgotten story,

The backstage emerges from memory, as though the fog just cleared,

I see that face, smiling, talking to someone, that’s me!

This street is in the future, I am taken aback to my old life!

The stages of life being different, our memories being constant,

I meet people whom I knew once, some from near,

Some from faraway places, all in the same dialogues,

All with me on different stages, at different times of life!

Today I do not know them, tomorrow I may see them,

My soul realizes those connections, hints at me in its own ways,

Some of them, I do realize, some I don’t, but they nag on in the mind,

Some days I wonder, who was it and forget my own existence.

Some days, I think where have I met them before, and keep wondering,

We are not new in this world, just the same people in different costumes,

One day, one life and we are together,

Tomorrow, another life and do not know each other!
